Sustainable is now a Certified B Corporation

Sustainable has become one of only 230 Certified B Corporations in Canada (and the first architecture firm in Canada). We have become part of an incredible group of forward-thinking business leaders who are putting social and environmental impact right alongside company profits, including the likes of the Business Development Bank of Canada, Patagonia, Danone Canada, Optel Group, Beau’s Brewery, Fiasco Gelato, Bullfrog Power, and more.

As a Certified B Corporation, we join a global community of business leaders that balance purpose and profit. We are legally required to consider the impact of our decisions on the wellbeing of our employees, clients, suppliers, community and environment. The foundation of our business is equally balanced on the triple bottom line, People, Planet, and Prosperity.

By achieving certification, we are being recognized for our credibility and trust by meeting the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. Certified B Corporations do not stop growing at certification. We are expected to grow an inclusive and sustainable economy and will continue to do so.

Congratulations to Sustainable on your accomplishment of becoming the first architectural firm in Canada to become a Certified B Corporation. The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation is proud to have worked with a partner that truly recognizes the importance of the wellbeing of employees, clients, suppliers, community and the environment.”
— -Jim Spray, AGS, CFO, Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF /FEESO)
That Sustainable is Canada’s first Certified B Corporation is no surprise; Paul Dowsett was the mind behind the first ‘sustainable’ project I wrote up for the Globe and Mail, and they continue to be first in my virtual Rolodex when I have any green-related questions or concerns. I also suspect they will continue to rack up many more firsts in the years to come. Congratulations!
— Dave LeBlanc, The Architourist at The Globe & Mail
We’ve always been incredibly proud of our partnership with Sustainable. Not only are they a company
dedicated to smart building design that prioritizes environmental sustainability, but they have also shown an immense amount of care and dedication to supporting better futures for LGBTQI2S youth in Canada,” said Helen Kennedy, executive director at Egale Canada. “Through our partnership at Egale Youth Services, Sustainable has developed a sustainable design solution for Egale Centre, Canada’s first and only transitional housing facility dedicated to LGBTQI2S youth, and together we’re creating a home that is healthy, affordable and resource-and energy-efficient
— Helen Kennedy, Executive Director, Egale Canada
On behalf of Rethink Sustainability Initiatives (RSI), where Paul Dowsett is RSI Board Vice-Chair, we are
delighted that Sustainable has been certified as the first B Corp architecture and building science firm in Canada – in recognition of the forward-thinking work that he and his team continue to lead in advancing the future readiness of buildings and communities, in support of a zero-carbon future. So proud. So well deserved.”
— Yasmin Glanville, RSI Founder, Board Director and Past Chair
Paul Dowsett and the team at Sustainable recognize the critical role that all businesses, and particularly
architects, play in shaping the kinds of communities in which people thrive. In the ten years that I have worked with this incredible team I have seen countless examples in which they have put equity, inclusion and community building at the forefront of their practice. I can’t think of a more appropriate architecture firm to lead the way in the B Corp movement of People. Planet. Prosperity...the world needs more Sustainable.
— Anne Gloger, Principal, East Scarborough Storefront / Centre for Connected Communities
Congratulations to Sustainable for becoming the first architectural firm in Canada to be certified as a B
Corporation. Erinn and I are so pleased to have worked with an architectural firm that walks talk when it comes to the triple bottom line of People, Planet, and Profit. Our new house is an elegantly-designed, traditional home that shows the way forward to a carbon-free future; both through our building materials and our all-electric, energy-reduced future operation. We could not be more pleased with the result and wish the entire team at Sustainable a healthy and prosperous future!
— Chris Skyrme & Erinn McNicol, Very Happy Clients
